San Francisco Film Society Presents SF360 Film+Club: Macbeth Featuring an Innovative Adaptation of Shakespeare at Mezzanine
SF360 Film+Club Takes Movies out of the Theater and Puts Them in a Club
June 12, 2007
The San Francisco Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club, a monthly social screening series, returns with a bold new take on MacBeth, directed by Geoffrey Wright, at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 19 at Mezzanine, 444 Jessie Street, between Mint and Sixth Street, just off Market.
The film, which Noah Cowen of the Toronto International Film Festival called “one of the best action films of the year,” is masterfully brutal and sexy with a kick-ass soundtrack, and re-imagines Shakespeare's classic in the underworld of present-day Melbourne. As one astute Australian journalist noted, the film is “brash, bawdy, bombastic and dripping with black blood.”
Wright, who directed Russell Crowe’s breakout film Romper Stomper, is faithful to Shakespeare’s dialogue, but utterly transforms the context. Macbeth, a loyal henchman to his crime boss, Duncan, is told by teenage witches that he will one day assume great power. Driven by their prophecy, he plots with his wife to kill Duncan, and takes the leadership of the gang for himself. Maintaining his power will require more murders and violence, finally driving his surviving enemies to unite and destroy him.
Doors open at Mezzanine at 7:00 pm, program starts at 7:30 pm.
Complimentary Absente cocktails and tasting from 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Tickets are $8.00 at the door or $5.00 if reserved in advance by emailing info@sf360.org.
