San Francisco Film Society Presents SF360 Film+Club: Screaming Masterpiece at Mezzanine
SF360 Film+Club Takes Movies out of the Theater and Puts Them in a Club
September 10, 2007
San Francisco, CA—The San Francisco Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club, a monthly social screening series, returns to Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street at Mint), on Wednesday, September 19 with Screaming Masterpiece, a rocking documentary about Iceland’s contemporary music scene featuring fascinating interviews and performances.
“Screaming Masterpiece covers the Icelandic music scene with admirable thoroughness, featuring international music figures such as Björk and Sigur Rós alongside lesser-known acts including electronic experimentalists Múm and teen rock band Nilfisk,” says Rod Armstrong, programming associate of the Film Society. “Mezzanine, with its diverse concert offerings and excellent sound system, will be a perfect venue for this Film+Club screening.” Other musicians featured include The Sugarcubes, Quarashi, Slowblow and more.
Screaming Masterpiece (2005), directed by Ari Alexander Ergis Magnússon, chronicles 1,000 years of Icelandic music, tracing contemporary Icelandic pop sounds to the country’s old music, handed down from medieval times, combined with the howl of arctic storms and the surf breaking on the rocky coast. At the edge of the habitable world, high in the North Atlantic, the Icelanders have whiled away the long, dark centuries patiently honing their caustic humor, eccentric melodies and ancient poetry. Screaming Masterpiece brings it all together.
Doors open at Mezzanine at 7:00 pm, program starts at 7:30 pm. Complimentary tasting provided by Pearl Vodka from 7:00–8:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00 at the door or $5.00 if reserved in advance by emailing info@sf360.org. Must be 21+ to attend.
In the future look for these programs: Silent Shout featuring The Knife; an evening of skateboard films including Stuntwood: The Birth, Life and Death of a Skateboard; new chapters of R. Kelly’s unprecedented audiovisual opus Trapped in the Closet; and ’80s Metal Sing-Along.
SF360 Film+Club: Screaming Masterpiece is presented by the San Francisco Film Society, Mezzanine and Rehab, and is sponsored by SF Weekly, 7x7 and Pearl Vodka.
The San Francisco Film Society, presenter of the 51st San Francisco International Film Festival (April 24–May 8, 2008), is a nonprofit arts and educational organization dedicated to celebrating film and the moving image.
